Broken on all Sides: Race, Mass Incarceration & New Visions for Criminal Justice in the U.S. Film Screening & Discussion Appleton Public Library will host a screening and discussion of Broken on all Sides: Race, Mass Incarceration & New Visions for Criminal Justice in the U.S. on Thursday, May 2nd, from 4:00-6:00 pm. Discussion will be led by the ESTHER (Faith Communities United for Justice) TIP (Treatment Instead of Prison) Task Force. ESTHER is part of the statewide 11x15 Campaign for Healthier and Safer communities. 11x15 is a movement of people of faith calling for change in the Wisconsin incarcerating system. Our goal is to reduce the prison population in Wisconsin by 11,000 by the end of 2015...eleven by 15. For further information visit: http://esther-foxvalley.org Broken on all Sides studies the history and causes of mass incarceration in the U.S. and how racism impacts justice. The documentary centers around the theory put forward by many, and most recently by Michelle Alexander (who appears in the movie), that mass incarceration has become "The New Jim Crow." That is, since the rise of the drug war and the explosion of the prison population, and because discretion within the system allows for arrest and prosecution of people of color at alarmingly higher rates than whites, prisons and criminal penalties have become a new version of Jim Crow. Much of the discrimination that was legal in the Jim Crow era is today illegal when applied to black people but perfectly legal when applied to "criminals." The problem is that through subjective choices, people of color have been targeted at significantly higher rates for stops, searches, arrests, prosecution, and harsher sentences. So, where does this leave criminal justice? Through interviews with people on many sides of the criminal justice system, this documentary aims to answer questions and provoke questions on an issue walled-off from the public's scrutiny. Community Conversations Phase IIFri, Apr 19, 2013  We invite you to participate in the planning for future growth of public library services. Next week, April 22-27, an experienced facilitator will conduct five focus groups to gather data pertaining to what our community envisions for future services at APL.
