Alliance for Young Artists & Writers
Artists and writers in grades 7-12 have another opportunity to show their work to a wider audience thanks to Scholastic's Art & Writing Awards.
Artists have until December 28, 2012, to get digital copies of their works uploaded to Helena Ehlke at the Milwaukee Art Museum. Digital doesn't disqualify 3D works--you can send in four photos with a ruler for scale. And don't shrug this off if you're a comic artist--this award includes categories for comics, film & animation, videogames, fashion, print making, digital art, and more. There are many more details that you should look over if this is of interest.
Writers have a closer deadline--December 15, 2012--and their uploaded works go to a different set of judges at the Belin & Blank Center at the University of Iowa. Like artwork, there are a variety of categories to compete in, including scripts, journalism, humor, flash fiction, persuasive writing, poetry, science fiction & fantasy, and more. Check out the other details and get working on your piece! If you're not sure about entering, take a look at the selections published in The Best Teen Writing of 2011. On a side note, how cool would it be if we had a story collection with your piece in it on our shelves?
