A US government system for classifying industries. An industry consists of a group of establishments primarily engaged in producing or handling the same product or group of products or in rendering the same services. Each industry is given a four digit number to identify it.

Established in 1937, SIC is being supplanted by the six-digit North American Industry Classification System (NAICS), which was released in 1997; however certain government departments and agencies, such as the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), still use the SIC codes.
