New
DVD Collection at Appleton Public Library
Many Appleton Public Library patrons are pleasantly
surprised with the new DVD collection. Thanks to a generous
grant from the Appleton Library Foundation which allowed the
purchase of the discs and equipment for in-library viewing,
we were able to introduced the new collection early in March.
These discs have been a welcome addition to the library because
a growing number of patrons have home computers with the capability
of playing DVDs as well as CDs, and many own DVD players.
DVDs look exactly like CDs. They are the same size and thickness,
but have high quality video playback. They offer less noise,
and a noticeably sharper picture than videocassettes. As with
CDs, there's no physical contact between the playing head
and the disc--and, as with CDs, the data surface is protected
by chemically inactive plastic which makes it more durable
than videocassettes. A DVD case looks just like a skinny VHS
case, the same height and width, but about half as thick.
Movies on DVD often have special features. One title, the
1937 Academy Award winner Lost Horizon, includes audio commentary
by restoration experts, an alternate ending and a photo documentary
narrated by a historian.
We are starting this new collection with over 200 titles,
including Disney classics, silent films, music videos, foreign
films as well popular current releases. It is expected that
this collection will grow as more titles are released. Along
with the Disney titles like Tarzan, Hercules, 101 Dalmations,
Pinocchio, and Peter Pan, we have other family entertainment
like Fly Away Home, Babe, and Sarah Plain and Tall.
Those with home equipment to view DVDs will find a variety
of titles available at the library. Patrons with Appleton
Public Library borrowing privileges can check out discs for
a period of one week. Anyone wishing to view a DVD in the
library can do so with library equipment located in the carrel
to the rear of the Information Desk.
