DVD Grant
Grants this year from the Appleton Library Foundation
will significantly enhance the library's DVD collection. They
will create a children's DVD collection, add anime, or Japanese
animation, films to the adult collection, and provide great depth
in the collection of adult classic films.
For the first time the Appleton Public Library will
have a Children's DVD collection. It will consist of popular movies,
films featuring characters like the Teletubbies and Winnie the Pooh,
and Disney titles.
Many of the anime films were television series in
Japan. Popular titles include Cowboy Bebop and Gundam Wing. The
most popular title purchased was Princess Mononoke, a film written
by Hayao Miyazaki. The library has also purchased the graphic novels
(comic books) of many of the anime titles.
A significant number of DVD titles produced by the
Criterion Company were purchased to enhance the adult classic film
collection. Criterion bought licensing rights to classic and out
of print films and reprocessed them onto DVD. Titles purchased include
Fellini's 8 ½, Ingmar Bergman's Cries and Whispers, and the
1969 Rolling Stones concert Gimme Shelter.
DVDs check out of the library for one week. There
is a 50 cent a day fine for overdue DVDs.
