Broadway Theatre
Archive
Appleton area theater lovers and students of theater
are now able to watch classics ranging from a 1966 version of
Death of a Salesman with Leo J. Cobb to A Moon for the Misbegotten
with Jason Robards on video or dvd. Because we received a gift
from a generous donor and a grant from the Appleton Library Foundation,
Appleton Public Library has acquired TV adaptations of Broadway
and off-Broadway plays in a collection called The Broadway Theatre
Archive.
The Broadway Theatre Archive is the world’s
largest collection of Broadway plays and great works of literature
adapted for television over the past five decades. Among them
are the finest anthology series produced for the three major television
networks and PBS including Great Performances, American Playhouse
and Theater in America. The collection features such leading actors
as Meryl Streep, Dustin Hoffman, Laurence Olivier, Robert Redford
and many more artists recreating their acclaimed Broadway performances
for television. Through digital restoration, The Broadway Theatre
Archive is reintroducing these classics to a new generation and
keeping the theater and television’s interpretation of it
thriving.
