With special funding from the Wisconsin Humanities Council and the
Appleton Library Foundation, the library will present a four-part
series on bluegrass music in June. The programs will provide an
opportunity to learn about and enjoy this uniquely American roots
music. The schedule will be:
June 5th
Lecture: Bill Malone
Malone is a retired professor from Tulane University. His research
specialties are Southern folk culture and Southern music. His publications
include, Country Music USA and Singing Cowboys
and Musical Mountaineers. He currently lives in Madison,
Wisconsin and hosts "Back to the Country," a radio show
on WORT, 89.9 FM.
June 12th
Film: High
Lonesome: The Story of Bluegrass Music
Narrated by Mac Wiseman, this documentary relates the history
of one of America's most enduring
musical forms. Includes the music of Bill Monroe, Ralph Stanley,
The Osborne Brothers, and many others.
June 19th
Book Discussion: Bluegrass
Odyssey: A Documentary in Pictures and Words 1966-1986 by Carl
Fleischhauer & Neil Rosenberg
A collaboration between bluegrass music's premier historian and
photographer, this book is a journey into the heart of a genuinely
American music and the culture and the community that fostered
it. Books available through the Community Services office. Discussion
led by Elizabeth Eisen, Appleton Public Library
June 26th
Concert: Art
Stevenson and High Water
This award winning four-piece bluegrass band from Babcock, Wisconsin
is led by Art Stevenson. Art has been playing bluegrass music
in the Midwest for 25 years. He was named "Favorite Male
Bluegrass Vocalist" and has appeared on a dozen bluegrass,
country, and folk music CDs and cassettes. Their repertoire includes
the bluegrass classics of Bill Monroe and The Stanley Brothers,
early country music, mountain songs, and new material. The band
incorporates banjo, mandolin, harmonica, guitar, and stand-up
