Teens
@ the Library
There
has been a lot of talk in the media lately about the decline
in reading for pleasure, especially by young people. You
would never guess it from the number of teens that checked out
books
and participated in the teen summer library program, Cover
Story recently. Teens poured into the teen area this summer
looking for great books and magazines to read just for fun. Of
course,
their tastes varied, but one thing unified them – teens
were looking for a book, an article, something to help them
enjoy their summer.
Not only did teens come to check out books, many came to the
library to help out too! This summer over 50 teen volunteers
were generous enough to give up part of their summer to help
the library. They did all sorts of jobs including delivering
materials to the home-bound through our walking books program,
shelving books in the teen area and helping with the teen’s
and children’s summer reading programs. All their hard
work helped library staff provide quality services to a record
number of patrons. All their great personalities made the summer
a lot more fun.
Opportunities for teens to help at the library do not end in
the summer. The library’s Teen Advisory Board (TAB) will
start up this fall giving teens the chance to voice their opinions
about library services, make use of some of their special talents,
meet other teens that share similar interests and make the library
a great place to be. If you are a teen that is interested in
the TAB, contact the Information desk at 832-6177 or e-mail teen@apl.org.
