Great Expectations
by Charles Dickens
Pip, an orphan boy adopted by a blacksmith's family, has good
luck and great expectations, and then loses both his luck and
his expectations. Through this rise and fall, however, Pip learns
how to find happiness. He learns the meaning of friendship and
the meaning of love. Ultimately he becomes a better person for
it.
October 14th
Tess of the D'Urbervilles
by Thomas Hardy
This novel explores issues of morality, the relativity
of moral values, their variation according to time and place
and the opposition between man-made laws and Nature. These issues
are explored through the experiences of Tess Durbyfield as she
encounters the problems of life.
November 11th
The Mill on the Floss
by George Eliot
This is the story of Maggie
Tulliver, the daughter of a miller in the English midlands
and her relationship with Philip Wakem,
son of a local lawyer. The novel is notable for its portrayal
of rural life.
