Great Director Film Series
This new film series will run first Wednesday afternoons every
other month from 1:00-3:30pm at Appleton Public Library's lower
level meeting room. View the work of five Oscar-winning directors.
Elizabeth Eisen, Community Services Librarian and Mark Harris,
Independent Scholar of Film will facilitate an introduction to
each director and film with an optional stay & chat session
following each film. Elizabeth is an avid film buff and has hosted
Appleton Public Library's Fall Film Festival for over ten years.
Mark first studied film as an American Studies major at Yale University.
After graduation, he wrote professional film criticism for a few
years. He received a Master of Arts degree from Boston University.
He has taught high school and college level courses.

March 3rd
Mr. Deeds Goes To Town (1936)
Director: Frank Capra-115 minutes
Stars: Gary Cooper & Jean Arthur
Longfellow Deeds (Cooper) lives a small town sort of life until
a wealthy relative dies and leaves him a fortune. After he moves
to the big city Deeds meets up with Babe Bennett (Arthur), a hotshot
newspaper reporter who poses as a damsel in distress.
May 5th
The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948)
Director: John Huston-126 minutes
Stars: Humphrey Bogart, Walter Huston, and Tim Holt
Dobbs (Bogart) and Curtin (Holt) meet in Mexico and work for a
contractor. They are taken to a remote site and told they will
be paid when the job is finished. After completing the job, the
contractor sets off for the hills with the two men. Will they
safely return?
July 7th
On the Waterfront (1954)
Director: Elia Kazan-108 minutes
Stars: Marlon Brando, Karl Malden, Lee J. Cobb, and Rod Steiger
Terry Malloy (Brando) has dreams of being a prizefighter while
running errands for Johnny Friendly (Cobb). Terry witnesses a
murder by two thugs and feels responsible when he meets the dead
man's sister.
September 1st
The Graduate (1967)
Mike Nichols-106 minutes
Stars: Dustin Hoffman, Anne Bancroft, and Katherine Ross
College track star Benjamin Braddock (Hoffman), is tired of being
the "golden boy" for his parents friends so he embarks
upon an affair with the wife of his father's boss. He discovers
he is yet another tool to ease middle-aged insecurity.
November 3rd
Annie Hall (1977)
Woody Allen-93 minutes
Stars: Woody Allen and Diane Keaton
Romantic adventures of a neurotic New York comedian Alvy Singer
(Allen) and his ditsy girlfriend Annie Hall (Keaton). The film
traces their relationship from their first meeting and serves
as an interesting exploration of love during the 1970s.
The series is free and open to the general public. Registration
