Dragons, Dreams
& Daring Deeds
@ the Appleton Public Library
The Appleton Library’s Summer Reading Program began on
May 23rd, and ends this year on August 5th, 2005. After eleven
weeks of reading great books, attending exciting programs, and
picking fun prizes, it all comes down to this: over 2,400 Appleton
children of all ages participated in the Summer Reading Games:
Bookopoly, Readerville, and Read-To-Me. Tom Pease encouraged
singing and dancing during one of three Kickoff Celebration concerts.
This summer preschoolers, toddlers, and babies could attend one
of sixteen storytimes performed just for them. School age kids
were happy to spend Tuesday afternoons with the Sword in the
Stone—performed by the Traveling Lantern Theatre Company,
Mark Hayward—Juggler and Yo-Yoer, L’il Rev—Musician,
the Wise Guy and His Gal—Imagireadination Fantabookasy
comedy, Linda DeNell—Harry Potter expert, and Bruce Hetzler—Magician.
By the end of the summer 6 adult and 38 teenage volunteers will
have put in over 600 hours of service assisting staff manning
the Marketplace, with the read to me program, handing out prizes,
shelving books, and assisting with storytimes and special programs.
We’re looking forward to next year already: Paws, Claws,
Scales and Tales @ the Appleton Library.
