Walking Books

Walking Books, a free delivery service for homebound individuals, was started 30 years ago by the Friends of Appleton Library. An Appleton Public Library staff member has coordinated the program since the early 1980s. The number of Walking Books clients has tripled since the early 1990s. Volunteers select and deliver library materials to clients in their homes or agencies such as nursing homes or assisted living facilities once every one to three weeks. Clients communicate their needs to the volunteer whether it is large or regular print, mysteries or romances. Walking Books clients are extremely grateful for the efforts of their volunteers. Providing the service is a very rewarding experience for our volunteers. Volunteers are needed for this important service. Please consider becoming a Walking Books volunteer. Contact Elizabeth Eisen, Walking Books Coordinator, at 832-6169 or eeisen@apl.org.
