Fine Print - Winter 2005  Volume XVI Number 4

Child Parent Collection

Have you ever noticed the words “Child Parent Collection” as part of the call number for children’s materials when you were doing a search and wondered what it meant? The “Child Parent Collection” is the call number for materials set aside that answer questions and concerns by parents and caregivers. All types of issues, major or minor can be handled with the Parenting Collection. The Parenting Collection is an information collection in picture book format to solve problems. Picture books are designed to be shared by a parent/caregiver and the child. A picture book combines words and pictures to tell a story. Text and images work together, to make the story come to life in the child’s imagination.

The Parenting Collection contains materials on social experiences that affect children and families i.e. alcohol abuse, sibling rivalry, etc.The books on first experiences for the child can be found in this collection--experiences like starting school, going to the dentist or doctor and having a new baby at the house. Some less common questions that can be asked and answered from this collection are questions like: how do we talk about death with our preschooler? Do you have any stories about having surgery I can share with my child? We have a problem with bed-wetting; do you have any books about that? My brother is getting married to his friend Mike; do you have any stories about alternative families? My granddaughter’s mother is in jail; do you have any books about this? My son is afraid to sleep over at his friend’s house because he doesn’t know if he should take his teddy bear; do you have a book about that? I have a biter in my daycare classroom; what was the book about biting?

There is also a small collection of nonfiction books in the Parent Collection. These books are aimed at the parent/caregiver. The “Appleton Area School District Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities Project” donated several of the books. Books in the nonfiction parenting collection are geared toward the adult looking for information. There are books on topics like parenting, ages and stages of growth for small children, and advice for parenting.

Check out the “Child Parent Collection” today. There are many great books to check out.
