Let's Talk About...The Oprah Book Club Books
What has Oprah Winfrey done? When she started her on-air book club in 1997, she was a publisher's dream come true. The books she selected became bestsellers. People who had not read a book since high school started reading again. Online book discussions popped up on the World Wide Web. And the reserve lists became a mile long at public libraries.
The American Library Association stepped in to provide free multiple copies of each of the book club titles to public libraries, including Appleton's. The Community Services section of the library is offering a series of discussion programs using the Oprah Book Club books in its collection.
The series will start this fall with three of the book club titles. The programs will be on Wednesday evenings at 7:00 pm in the lower level meeting room of the library. They will be free and open to the general public. Pre-register by calling Community Services at 832-1695. Copies of the books will be available through the Community Services Office.
The schedule will be:
| September 23, 1998 | Black and Blue by Anna Quindlen |
| October 21, 1998 | The Rapture of Canaan by Sheri Reynolds |
| November 18, 1998 | Breath, Eyes, Memory by Edwidge Danticat |
