Report on Collection Use in 1995


Michael Nitz, Collection Development Coordinator, has issued a "Collection Use Analysis" report for 1995. The report details acquisition and circulation statistics and compares the data to previous years.

Total circulation for 1995 was 934,783. The top five circulating collections were:

Total circulation for 1994 was 935,868 and the top five circulating collections then were: Nitz reported that the usage of the collection follows the 80-20 rule devised by Vilfredo Pareto, meaning that 80% of the circulations are provided by 20% of the collection. Usage of the collection is also influenced by the school year with collections such as Children's Advanced Easy Readers, Adult Non-Fiction Videos, and current Children's Fiction as well as subject areas such as Economics, North American Geography, Encyclopedias, Central European History, and Agriculture circulating more during the school year period. Young Adult Fiction and all Children's Fiction and Picture Books circulate more heavily during the summer months. Adult non-fiction subject areas such as Paranormal Phenomena, Technology , Pharmacology, and Management circulate at rates that are "above average".

The 1995 materials budget was $281,000. During the year 12,690 items were ordered and 17,079 items were added to the collection. The total number of volumes owned at year end were 252,888.
