Task Forces Lead Development

Task forces originated at APL just 4 years ago when they were called upon to deal with various aspects of library operation such as Automation Planning, Personnel Policy, Building Supervision, Staff Training & Development, and Long Range Planning. Each task force, consisting of a small group of staff, has met and accomplished many tasks. Some of the groups reached their goals within a short period of time and have been inactive for a while. Others such as the Staff Development group have meet regularly since their inception. Some of the groups, which first met at the all-staff Presidents' Day session in 1992, will attempt to revitalize this year and determine future goals.

Library automation recommendations were generated by the Automation Committee. They developed a plan to build a Local Area Network (LAN) which has been implemented as a Novel 3.12 network linking workstations throughout the library. Internet access and a World Wide Web (www) server were added to the LAN in 1995. Internet access to periodical indexes through Information Access Company is currently being developed. Future projects either being developed or under consideration include adding access to OCLC ( a nation wide bibliographic database), other Appleton city departments, growth of Internet services, making on-line printing available to the public, and development of the library website.

The Personnel Policy Committee drafted a Personnel Policy which with some revisions was recently adopted by the Library Board. They are now developing a staff handbook based on the adopted policy.

The Building Supervision group gave recommendations which resulted in the hiring of a Building Monitor to help with evening library supervision during the school year. Having accomplished their goal, the group is currently inactive.

The Staff Development Group has coordinated presentations at monthly staff meetings and some of the Presidents' Day activities as well as reviewing travel procedures and forms. In the future this group may look into computer training needs and options for the organization. Needs for computer training might be addressed by this group in conjunction with the Automation Planning group.

The Long Range Planning team coordinated activities on President's Day in 1992 which led to Board adoption of our current Mission Statement, Vision Statement and Long Range Plan. This group has not been active for some time, but will be meeting to discuss future goals.
