The Appleton Public Library is embarking upon a six-month long
planning process that will ensure the library meets the service and program
needs of the community over the next five years. "We're going to look at
several areas, including the role of technology, popular materials, public
programs, and the possible need for future branches," stated Library
Director Terry Dawson. "The last round of planning was focused on the
building expansion, but now it's time for a substantial look at the future library
service needs of the community."
Himmel and Wilson, a
library consultant firm, has been hired to conduct focus groups and community
surveys to get community input into the process. They will also conduct
interviews with elected officials and city planners. A library staff/community
member planning committee has been selected to work with the Library Board on
formulating a library vision, goals and objectives, and an action plan.
Focus groups were conducted during the week of February 15 and the
community surveys, both by mail or telephone and in the library, will be taken
in early March. The final action plan will be produced by June 30.
Any Appleton-area resident who would like to be involved with the
planning process can call library administration at 832-6170. Costs associated
with the process are partly funded by a grant from the Appleton Library
Foundation.
