Appleton Library Events and Information

"It's US: A Celebration of who we are in America Today", a travelling photo exhibition, will be on display at the Appleton Public Library from August 19 to September 29. The exhibition is being presented nationally in 74 cities on a yearlong tour jointly sponsored by Time Warner and the American Library Association. This joint project focuses on the broad diversity of culture found in America. It encourages us to ask these questions: What does it mean to be or become an American? What traditions and dreams do we share as members of different ethnic, racial or religious groups? What challenges prevent us from living in harmony? How can we meet those challenges?

Twenty-one junior and senior high schools have been contacted to assure participation in an essay contest sponsored by Time Warner. One student will be awarded a $1,000 U.S. Savings Bond for answering the questions posed by the exhibit. In addition area schools will receive a paper show (posters) version of the exhibit.

In conjunction with the exhibit, the following related programming will be offered at Appleton Public Library:

Press Briefing, Thursday, August 22 at 9:30 am, to officially introduce the exhibit to the press and public.

Book at Night, Monday evenings in August, from 7:00-8:00 pm, with the theme "Our American Heritage".

Fall Film Festival, Tuesdays in September, from 7:00-8:00 pm,with multicultural theme.

For further information about the exhibit, contact Christopher Doyle of Time Warner at 831-9108, Elizabeth Eisen of Community Services, Appleton Public Library at 832-6169, or Children's Services (to schedule school group visits to view the exhibit) at 832-6187.
