Razzle Dazzle Read is the slogan this year at the Appleton Public Library, where youngsters ages birth and up are invited to join in the library's annual summer reading program. Razzle Dazzle Read celebrates the circus--especially the talented people whose skill and humor make for dazzling shows--and Wisconsin's historic ties to the circus. Children may register for the 9 week program beginning June 10.
Among the many activities planned for this summer include reading games for school age children and a read-to-me program for birth to five, storytimes forpreschool children and their families, film programs, and presenters. Presenters scheduled to appear at the library are:
The summer reading program is sponsored annually by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. It is designed to encourage children to read for pleasure and to explore all the resources available at this public library. As they enjoy books and other library materials such as music recordings, magazines, and computers, they can build lifelong interests. Furthermore, "Reading In and Out of School", a 1992 study from the U.S. Department of Education, reports that children who spend more time reading outside of school have higher scores on reading comprehension tests in school at the fourth, eighth and twelfth grade levels.
