The use of the Internet and electronic mail has grown in volume beyond the wildest expectations of almost everyone. More and more library patrons are using the Internet and dial-in modems to remotely access library catalogs, periodical indexes and other databases.
The Appleton Public Library is now extending the convenience of electronic reference to its patrons by adding the "Ask A Librarian" service to the library's homepage. In addition to answering questions in person, over the telephone and by mail; the reference staff at APL is now doing reference work electronically via the Internet. Any Appleton library patrons who have Internet access can use this service and submit questions from home or work via computer. Choosing the "Ask A Librarian" link on the homepage, brings up an electronic form to be completed. The form asks for such information as name, address, e-mail address and phone number. Next, there is a section in which to submit a reference question. Providing as much information about the subject and any limitations such as reading levels or time limitations helps in getting a fast and correct response from the reference librarians. After giving as much information as possible, simply clicking on the submit button near the bottom of the form sends the question on its way.
A member of the Reference and Information Services staff reads the electonically submitted messages each day and routes the questions to the staff member with the most expertise in the question area. Reference staff responds to questions as soon as possible, usually within one or two working days. Internet Reference attempts to answer the questions within the same guidelines that are applied to questions received from walk-in and telephone patrons. Individuals who are doing in-depth research or who need extensive individual guidance are encouraged to come to the library and work with one of the reference librarians.
Electronic reference service is one of the choices in the variety of remote services extended to Appleton Library patrons. To submit your reference question electronically go to www.apl.org and click on "Ask A Librarian".
