Books on CD
Fine Print winter 1999
In response to requests from patrons, the library has acquired a selection of audio books on compact disc. Money to start this new media collection was obtained with a grant from the Appleton Library Foundation. The collection is starting with about 130 titles and there are plans to add more regularly. The most numerous and most popular titles are readings of popular fiction and classical books. Because users have different preferences, the library purchases both condensed and full text titles.

Some full text titles are: The Dilbert Principle, The Old Man and the Sea, Murder at Fenway Park and Ballad of Frankie Silver. Condensed titles include: War and Peace, Moll Flanders, Paradise Lost and Silas Marner.

Many homes, cars and computers are equipped with CD players so that patrons who have been enjoying music on CD now have the opportunity to listen to the spoken word on their CD players. Library users have demonstrated a strong interest in listening to books while at home or on the road. They are especially popular with the library's homebound users.

Since the library's goal is to continue to meet the needs of its customers, as well as to develop well rounded collections, staff is always receptive to user requests for purchase. Forms for indicating a title or subject area the user would like the library to consider purchasing are available at both the Information Desk and Reference Desk.
