As public dollars become tighter, the library budget is unable to grow as rapidly as the growth in library use. The Friends of Appleton Library (FOAL) helps fill the gap and funds innovative services beyond the scope of public funds. FOAL is a strong advocate of our library and also supports APL in developing its facilities and services for the community.
Each year FOAL provides grants to the library for
- library materials and special collections
- programs
- technology
- marketing
- special projects
Many of the Friends also serve as volunteers at the library. The Friends help fund the FOAL/Frank P. Young Scholarship, assisting students with professional library education. Historically, FOAL and the Appleton Library Foundation were separate organizations. In 2009 the groups merged and are now officially known as the Friends of Appleton Library. An endowment fund is maintained through the Community Foundation.
FOAL funds have been used for
- starting up public access to the Internet
- support for the children’s summer library program, including funding for outreach sites at schools and the Boys and Girls Club, as well as allowing children to use their library card as a bus pass
- new collections and new formats of materials started with seed money from FOAL. These include many now standard items: FOAL helped the library get started with DVDs, books on CD, PlayAways, and other collections.
- Fox Cities Reads community reading event
- appearances by major speakers and New York Times best selling authors such as Alice Hoffman, Barbara Ehrenreich, and Bob Greene
- children’s performers such as Debbie Dadey, Tom Pease, as well science, nature, and theatrical events
Funds
FOAL welcomes donations to any one of several special funds. Contact Community Foundation staff if you are interested in setting up a named designated fund.
- Appleton Library Endowment Fund, an unrestricted fund supporting library materials, programs and services
- FOAL Endowment supporting special event library programs, displays and program series
- Virginia McMahon Endowment, supporting programs and events for children
- Iris Olsen Glidden Memorial, supporting materials for media collections
- Capital campaign fund to support future library building – this fund is under construction; watch for information!
Membership
The used book sales held by FOAL every November and May are popular events. The Give a Child a Book Campaing, held every year just before the holidays, gathers thousands of books that are offered to low-income families in the Fox Valley through several agencies. Just by joining FOAL, you are showing support for the library, a wonderful asset to our community.
