What We Do
Over the years, FRIENDS initiated many programs and services, including:
Starting up public access to the Internet
Supporting the children’s summer library program, including funding for outreach sites at schools and the Boys and Girls Club, as well as allowing children to use their library card as a bus pass
New collections and new formats of materials including many now standard items such as DVDs, books on CDs, and other collections.
Fox Cities Reads community reading event
Appearances by major speakers and best-selling authors such as Alice Hoffman, Barbara Ehrenreich, Michael Perry, and Bob Greene
Children’s performers such as Tom Pease and Debbie Dadey, as well science, nature, and theatrical events
Our Give a Child a Book Campaign, held every year just before the holidays, which gathers thousands of books that are offered to low-income families
The Hmong Resource Center and Hmong programming
In 2010 FRIENDS supported:
A wide variety of library programs, including:
Music @ the Atrium featuring many local & some national musicians
Children’s, Teen, and Adult Summer Library Program
Hmong Resource Center Celebration, including bi-lingual story-time
Fox Cities Book Festival authors
“Writing Matters” and “Creative Journey” programming
Fox Cities Reads authors & books
Many community collaborations, including:
NEW World Cinema Series (Multicultural Center)
Bullying program and panel discussion (Appleton’s Diversity program, AASD)
Martin Luther King Memorial Service (Toward Community, Lawrence University)
Candidate forums (LWV, AAUW, Post-Crescent, WHBY, others)
Shining Star Story Time for autistic children (Autism Society)
Money Smart Week (FISC, area banks, credit unions, UW extension, others)
New Technologies and Formats, including:
Children’s educational computers
Teen’s program gadgets & gaming systems
Playaway audio books
Upgraded wireless services
Computer courses
Educational & skills DVDs
