Local History
Preserving the heritage of the community is an important role of the public library.  Our Zuelke Building corner in the 1850sWisconsin collection contains thousands of books, maps, photos and documents, detailing the history of Appleton, the Fox Valley and Wisconsin. In addition to collecting and preserving local history, the library also does research and publishes information.  Below is a listing of resources available from the Library web site. For more local history resources visit Fox Valley Memory.
  • The Post-Crescent Index  indexes articles on local events from the The Post-Crescent newspaper, with some entries dating to the 1850s.

  • Obituary Index is a partial index to obituaries and death notices appearing in Appleton newspapers.

  • APL Digitized Historical Resources - selected local history resources, including four historical Outagamie County plat maps, five city directories from the late 1800s, two historic building surveys and two compilations of early pioneer biographies. There are also two historical overviews, one from Appleton's 75th Anniversary celebration in 1932, and one marking the 100 year period of 1857 - 1957. Click here for a partial index of the plat maps.
