Internet & Computer Classes
   Spring / Summer 2008

These informal labs are ideal for beginners, allowing you to gain practical, hands-on PC computer experience. (The Library does not have Mac's). All classes are held in the 2nd floor computer lab and are free and open to the public, though class size is limited.

Registration is Required and consists of adding your name and contact information to the sign-up list. Registration for each class opens one month prior to the class. For more information or to register, call 832-6173 or stop at the second floor Reference Desk.

Palm Beach County Library System "Mousing Around" tutorial.  Using the Mouse

No experience with computers? It's vitally important to be comfortable using a mouse, and this class will give you plenty of practice. Learn about moving the mouse, clicking, double-clicking, right-clicking, dropping and dragging, highlighting and scrolling. (We'll use the two tutorials linked to through the mouse images on this page.) 1 hour.

  Computer Basics

Requires the ability to use the mouse, including double-clicking, right-clicking, and highlighting.
Don't know where to start? This class will teach you some of the very basics of using your PC. Learn to start programs on your computer, save documents, create folders to organize your work, and customize your desktop with backgrounds and shortcuts. Use this class to ask questions and get hands-on computer experience. 1½ hours.

  Internet Basics

Requires the ability to use the mouse, including double-clicking, right-clicking, and highlighting.
This class will cover the very basics of navigating the Internet, including looking at URLs and search engines. 2 hours.

  Word Basics

Requires the ability to use the mouse, including double-clicking, right-clicking, and highlighting.
This class will cover the basics of using Word to create letters or other documents. Tasks covered will include opening, saving, formatting, and printing documents, as well as using spell check, cutting and pasting, and adding pictures. 2 hours.

  Excel Basics

Requires the ability to use the mouse, including double-clicking, right-clicking, and highlighting. Basic computer experience desired.
If you’ve never worked with spreadsheets but would like to learn more effective ways to manipulate and analyze data, this class is for you! It will cover the basics of using Excel, including creating new spreadsheets and displaying the data in the most effective manner. It will also cover the basics of using formulas. 2 hours.

  Power Point Basics

Requires the ability to use the mouse, including double-clicking, right-clicking, and highlighting.
Have you ever wanted to create an electronic slideshow for a presentation or just for fun? This class will cover using the various Power Point templates for background, style and layout, as well as inserting customized text, pictures, or graphs. As time allows it may also cover creating a timed presentation that includes music, narration, slide transitions, or graphic animation. Come with an idea of the kind of presentation you would like to do and create one as you learn the basics of the software. If you would like a copy of your presentation, don't forget a disc so you can save it.
2 hours.

  Email: Signing Up

Requires the ability to use the mouse, including double-clicking, right-clicking, and highlighting.
Sign up for a free email account (we'll be using Google's Gmail). Learn how to compose and send an email, save other people’s email addresses, and attach documents or pictures to send in an email. Ask any other questions you have about email and we’ll try to answer them. 2 hours.

  Email Basics

For people who already have an email account but would like to learn more.
Requires the ability to use the mouse, including double-clicking, right-clicking, and highlighting.
