Director's Report
Dawson asked Wiltzius to explain the "Governor's First Book" program. Every child born in Wisconsin this year will receive a Little Golden Book entitled "My First Little Mother Goose." The books are purchased by the State of Wisconsin and distributed via libraries to local hospitals. Children's Services Supervisor Carole DeJardin and the Friends of the Appleton Library will be assembling packets with local library information in each book. Schuessler asked if all the books were in English and suggested future consideration be given to having them in different languages.
The Friends of the Appleton Library (FOAL) Children's Committee was formed because of strong interest of FOAL in Children's programs. The Committee has selected 2 programs to support this year: The "Governor's First Book" initiative and the Salvation Army's "Give a child a book."
At Dawson's request, Kelly explained that America Links Up is managed by the American Library Association to assist libraries in on-line services. This week is "Kids Online Week" and the library is giving three different programs in accessing and using the Internet.
Dawson informed the Board that OWLS has asked Outagamie County to increase their appropriations. Presently, the County support is at 18.9%, OWLS is asking this to be increased to 20% or $41,000. Bergman made the motion that a letter of support be written by the Board to Outagamie County. Bloedow seconded. The motion passed.
Other Business
Dawson asked that the Policy Committee reconvene to study several of the remaining policies the library staff has drafted. Schuessler indicated she would schedule a meeting.
The meeting adjourned at 5:55PM
